The Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP) Program, and its two Prime Contractor Laboratories, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL) and Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, are continuing with plans to test the supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton energy conversion system. NNPP Program work completed since the 2009 symposium has included: final design of the 100 kWe Integrated System Test (IST), final design and procurement of test loop components and the instrumentation and control system for the IST, completion of turbomachinery development and operational testing at Barber-Nichols Inc. (BNI) in Sandia National Laboratory’s Gen IV test loop, fundamental modeling and testing of critical component performance features, and major updates in the dynamic performance model being used both to predict IST performance and to evaluate the testing completed at BNI. The start of IST testing is scheduled for mid 2011.
